Some Special Women That Could Have Been Men.

There is a saying that “some things are not what they seem”. This is particularly true for certain women, who have XY chromosomes that are found in men. These women appear outwardly as females but genetically they are males. I don’t mean tomboys. The females I’m talking about don’t necessarily have to exhibit male traits. They are called “XY females” and have a condition known as XY gonadal dysgenesis; specifically, pure gonadal dysgenesis.
To read about XY gonadal dysgenesis, click on: All Men are Originally Females.
As a child, an XY female looks very much like a normal girl in every perceivable physical characteristic. In most cases, the parents may not even know that their daughter could have been a boy and the girl remains oblivious of her condition. It is when the girl reaches adolescence that she begins to realise that she may not be as much a female as other girls because while they go through puberty, she doesn't. So, why doesn't she experience puberty? The reason is that, even though her external genitalia resembles that of a normal female, she lacks ovaries that will produce hormones responsible for the changes seen on girls in puberty. Instead, in place of female gonads, she has a mass of non-functional fibrous tissue. Consequently, she will not be able to conceive, not naturally though.

However, puberty can be induced in an XY female by means of hormone replacement treatment using oestrogen and progestin. Also, the non-functional gonad is surgically removed because it has a high tendency of developing cancerous cells. Meanwhile, there may be an instance whereby an XY female has a womb but no ovaries, pregnancy will then be induced by implantation of an already fertilised egg from a donor. For now, this is the only way an XY female can get pregnant and bear children.

Sabinus.

A lecturer asked his class, “why is the earth round?” Everyone was quiet. He repeated the question and again there was no response. Then, a young girl chuckled and eventually busted out laughing. The lecturer then asked her, “young lady, what tickles your fancy?'. The babe, looking genuinely surprised, retorted, “I talk am say over-sabiness dey worry u. Sir, how u take sabi say i buy my fancy cloth for Tickles Boutique?”

10Gbps Li-Fi Generated By UK Scientists.

Light Fidelity

In addition to the achievements made by a group of Chinese researchers in developing a Li-Fi system that can generate data at 150Mbps, another team of scientists from the UK, on Monday (October 28), announced that they were able to transmit data at 10Gbps using micro-LEDs.

The British scientists achieved this feat by simultaneously sending 3.5Gbps streams of data through each of the three primary colours --- red, green and blue—that make up white light. The work was part of an initiative known as the “ultra-parallel visible light communication project” that involves the use of parallel beams of light from very tiny bulbs to transmit data at high speed.

Light Fidelity, in general, employs a technique called Orthogonal Frequency Divisional Multiplexing in which a signal is split into several narrowband channels at frequencies (and in the case of an LED bulb, splits light into millions of alterations in light intensity per second). Hence, it switches the bulb on and off at an ultra-fast rate (not noticeable by the human eye), thereby transmitting large amounts of binary data at very high speeds.

Latest Gist on Umuahia Main Market Demolition --- Man Dies in a Store.

There is this story that one man from Ubakala went into one of the abandoned shops on Sunday (27th October) to remove its roofing rods but was killed when the roof crashed down on him. It is not yet clear whether the shop was his or not, but a popular opinion is that “he had gone to take what didn't belong to him”.

The Abia State Government provided buses that ferry people to and fro the new market, but it’s not free. You pay N30 only --- a difference of N20 less than what you’ll pay to private commercial bus drivers.

Welcome to “Malaysia” --- the Onuimo Market.

Malaysia
This is Malaysia.
I’m not kidding. That’s what the traders there call the market. Though the place doesn’t look anything like real Malaysia, I think its traders dubbed it “Malaysia” because it provides them with a place to do business far away from their homes in Umuahia --- a sort of the “market abroad”.

Prepare to Witness a Rare Solar Eclipse on Sunday.

Annular Eclipse

There will be an eclipse of the sun on Sunday (November 3). This particular type of eclipse is a rare one and is known as a hybrid solar eclipse. It will start out as a “ring of fire” eclipse along the path of totality and then turn into a total eclipse.

Most of Africa and the Middle East, as well as parts of the United States and Europe will see a partial solar eclipse. People in Nigeria will witness the eclipse at around 02:40 pm (local time) but if you are in Ghana, you will see it earlier at about 01:25pm (local time) in the afternoon. Meanwhile, countries like Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia and Somalia lie along the path of totality and people there will see as the moon totally covers the sun and slowly drifts pass it.

Please, DO NOT look directly at the sun during an eclipse with a telescope or your unaided eye. Severe eye damage can result and scientists use special filters to safely view the sun. You can wear a welder’s shield over your eyes or use a pinhole camera. There are other ways, described in Space.com, you can view an eclipse. Some people I know normally look at its reflection from a bowl of water.

Chinese Scientists Create Li-Fi Faster Than Wi-Fi.

A group of Shanghai-based scientists have successfully developed a faster means of transmitting internet signals using light bulbs.

The technology is called Li-Fi. Yes “Light Fidelity”. It is a wireless communication that uses light as a carrier instead of the traditional radio frequencies that you are used to. It has the advantage of being able to be used in electromagnetic sensitive areas such as inside an aircraft or nuclear power plant without causing any interference and is more secure compared to Wi-Fi. It is also cheaper as it doesn’t require any specialised communication device other than a light bulb and a microchip.

The team, in an experiment, connected four computers to the internet using a single 1Watt light bulb. The leader of the research team, Professor Chi Nan, noted that an LED bulb inserted with special microchips was able to generate data rates at 150Mbps; a data speed that is higher than what is currently obtainable in China.

Note that Li-Fi technology proceeds from visible light communication (VLC) that was developed by Alexander Graham Bell in 1880. And since then, VLC has undergone a lot of technological innovations and apart from in Li-Fi, it is also being used in Fibre-optics Communication, Free Space Optics and RONJA.

LG Unveils “Self-Healing”, Curved-Screen Smartphone.

LG has officially unveiled their latest contender to Samsung's Galaxy Round. LG’s curved-screen smartphone, called G Flex, is curved along the horizontal axis. It uses the same flexible OLED screen technology as Galaxy Round to allow for a dramatic curve on the horizontal axis and has and a 6-inch 720p display. Its weight is 177 grams and the thickness is between 7.9 to 8.7 millimeters.

G Flex is powered by a 2.26GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 processor and uses 2GB of RAM. It is also equipped with a 13-megapixel camera and carries a 3,500mAh battery.

The phone has a feature called “swing lock screen” that moves the wallpaper when you tilt it and creates different unlocking effects as you touch different areas of the screen. In addition, LG claims that the G Flex’s back cover has a “self-healing” ability as it designed with a special protective film that gets rid of scratches within minutes.
